Figuring out our next steps.......

After mailing out our Valentine's Day cards to Mr. Opler and World's Finest we decided to address the issue of the availability of Fair Trade Certified chocolate. To engage them we gave the following prompt to respond to in their writers notebook; "Why have or why haven't you chosen to eat Fair Trade Certified chocolate. We stressed the importance of answering this question truthfully in hopes of finding out some of the reasons why our students had eaten non-fair trade chocolate.

After writing their responses we had a class discussion in which it was revealed that some of our students had relapsed and had eaten products from Hershey and M&M's since we had declared our boycott of non-fair trade chocolate on Valentine's Day.

The students who had eaten non-fair trade chocolate cited the following reasons:
  1. Hershey and M&M products are everywhere they go and easily available for them to purchase
  2. You can not find Fair Trade Certified chocolate at the local community supermarket the students and their family frequent.

This led us to think.....

"What can be the next actions we can take to make Fair Trade Chocolate available to these chocoholics?"

We discussed ways people can initiate change. A few students had said boycott...but we realized that we should not punish the local supermarket for being unaware of fair trade chocolate.

And then came that magical "P" word that we were looking for..... PETITION.

Stay tuned for the next post ...we'll tell you all about!
